Who We Are
About Us
Mauritania Experience is a locally owned and operated tour company based in Mauritania. Our team grew up here — in the Adrar region, in the north, along the Iron Ore Train route. The Sahara is not an adventure we discovered on a trip abroad. It is the landscape we know, navigate, and organise expeditions through every season.
We started Mauritania Experience because international travellers kept arriving with a genuine desire to experience this country, but without a reliable way to reach it properly. The logistics are genuinely complex. The best places — Chinguetti, Ouadane, the Iron Ore Train, Ben Amera, Terjit Oasis — reward those who understand what they're doing and who can navigate not just the terrain but the relationships that open it up.
Every itinerary we offer has been personally completed by our team, in multiple seasons. The guides, drivers, and guesthouse contacts in our network are people we have worked with for years. We do not use third-party booking platforms, outsourced guide agencies, or arrangements we cannot stand behind directly.
Our clients are independent travellers, adventure photographers, overlanders, journalists, and anyone who wants to experience the real Mauritania — not a softened version of it packaged for people who don't know what it offers.
What Sets Us Apart
Six things that define how we work — and why they matter for a trip to Mauritania specifically.
Every guide on our team is a Mauritanian national who grew up in the region they guide in. No expatriates, no agencies, no middlemen. The person leading your trip is the same person who knows which family to ask for water in the Adrar and which desert track washed out last month.
We run small-group and private itineraries exclusively — maximum 8 people per vehicle. Larger groups travel in multiple vehicles with individual guide cover. You are never shuffled onto a coach tour. The pace, focus, and quality stay consistent regardless of group size.
The Iron Ore Train is our signature experience. We have more logged departures from Choum and more return crossings than any other operator offering this journey. We know the timing, the boarding process, the right gear, and what the first-timer mistakes look like — because we have seen all of them.
Every trip is built around your dates, interests, and pace. Nothing is fixed except the quality of the experience. We can build a 5-day Iron Ore Train focus, a 10-day full Mauritania circuit, or a custom itinerary that combines the ancient cities, the Richat Structure, and the Atlantic coast. We don't run fixed departures you have to fit into.
We respond to enquiries within a few hours during business hours — not in two to three business days. For clients already on trip, we maintain direct communication throughout. If something changes in the desert, you hear from us before you find out yourself.
Comprehensive pre-trip safety briefings, properly equipped Toyota 4×4 vehicles with full spare kit, and emergency protocols for every route. We operate October–March only, outside the dangerous heat window. Full details are on our Safety Standards page.
Our Credibility
There are other operators who can get you to Mauritania. Here is what separates those with local credibility from those without it.
Mauritania Experience is a Mauritanian company, run by Mauritanians. The knowledge behind every trip is the kind that cannot be learned from a guidebook or imported from abroad.
Pre-trip safety briefings, emergency desert protocols, a maintained local network across every region we operate in, and vehicles equipped for the real conditions of the Sahara. See our full safety guide for details.
Every guide, driver, and guesthouse contact in our network is someone we know personally — often someone we have worked with for years. No third-party booking systems. No strangers responsible for your safety.
We quote clearly from the first message. What we say is what you pay — no surprise charges on the road, no hidden operator fees, no ambiguity about what is and isn't included.
Navigating the Mauritanian Sahara safely requires years of experience — with the terrain, the seasons, the routes, and the people. That knowledge is the foundation of every itinerary we offer.
Our access to nomadic families, ancient manuscript libraries, and the most remote corners of Mauritania comes from long-term personal relationships that no guidebook or booking platform can replicate.
