Mauritania Tours with Local Guides

Mauritania Experience is a local Mauritanian tour operator offering private and small-group trips across Mauritania. Travel with local guides through Chinguetti, Ouadane, Terjit Oasis, the Adrar desert, and the Richat Structure, then continue to Nouadhibou or add the Iron Ore Train. We coordinate each route around your dates and interests, from desert circuits to custom journeys.

Mauritania is one of the world's least-visited countries — which is exactly what makes it worth the journey. No crowds. Intact Saharan landscapes. Ancient cities with libraries that have never seen a tourist queue. The Iron Ore Train, the Richat Structure, Terjit Oasis, and the open desert between Chinguetti and Choum are all experiences that exist on a different scale from anywhere else in Africa. We have been running tours here for years and know every track, guesthouse, and train departure window. Learn more about us.

Destinations Across Mauritania

Every destination below can be combined into a single expedition or visited independently. Ask us to build the right circuit for your group.

Open iron ore wagons of the Mauritania Iron Ore Train crossing the Sahara at dusk
Iron Ore Train

One of the longest and heaviest trains on Earth. 460 km across the open Sahara in open ore wagons or the passenger carriage — from Choum to Nouadhibou.

Iron Ore Train tours
Travelers exploring the ancient stone ruins of Chinguetti in the Adrar desert, Mauritania
Chinguetti & Ouadane

Two of the ancient caravan cities of the Sahara. Chinguetti — the seventh holiest city of Islam — holds medieval manuscript libraries in a desert that has been encroaching for centuries.

Chinguetti guide
Aerial view of the Richat Structure — Eye of the Sahara — in the Mauritanian desert
Richat Structure

The Eye of the Sahara: a 50-km geological formation visible from space. Standing at its rim gives an idea of scale that photographs struggle to capture.

Richat Structure guide
Palm trees and canyon walls of Terjit Oasis in the Adrar region of Mauritania
Terjit Oasis

A hidden freshwater oasis carved into red canyon walls. Swimming beneath the palm fronds in a crack of the Adrar plateau — the contrast with the surrounding desert is startling.

Terjit Oasis guide
Golden sunset light over Mauritanian Sahara sand dunes in the Adrar region
Adrar Desert

Vast sand seas, rocky plateaus, and ancient caravan routes through the Mauritanian Sahara. Camps under the Milky Way, dune walks at dawn, and villages that the modern world has barely touched.

7-day Adrar circuit
Stone walls of the ancient desert city of Ouadane in Mauritania at sunset
Ouadane

A UNESCO World Heritage Site even more remote than Chinguetti. The old ksar is largely abandoned — stone buildings collapsing slowly back into the desert from which they were built.

Ouadane guide
Coastal light over the tidal flats of Banc d'Arguin National Park, Mauritania
Banc d'Arguin

A UNESCO-listed national park of 12,000 km² where over two million migratory birds winter on shallow tidal flats between Nouakchott and Nouadhibou. One of Africa's great wildlife spectacles.

A traveler on a rocky desert ridge in Mauritania — the overland route from Dakhla into the Sahara
Dakhla → Mauritania

The classic overland entry: crossing from Dakhla in southern Morocco into Mauritania at Guerguerat, then south through Nouadhibou into the desert. Ideal for overlanders and those with time.

Why Book With Us

Why Travel With a Local Mauritania Tour Operator

A local team makes a difference when a Mauritania tour crosses remote desert roads, historic towns, and changing travel logistics. Here is how we support your trip.

Local Mauritanian guides

Every guide is a Mauritanian national who grew up in the region they guide in. You travel with people who know the landscape, language, and local customs.

Private 4×4 transport where required

Remote routes use experienced drivers and capable 4×4 vehicles, with transport coordinated between Nouakchott, Atar, Chinguetti, Ouadane, Terjit, Choum, and Nouadhibou as needed.

Local logistics and accommodation

We coordinate the practical details of guesthouses, desert camps, route timing, and local arrangements so you can focus on the places you came to see.

Flexible itineraries

We do not sell fixed package tours. Your dates, your interests, and your pace shape the itinerary — from a short Adrar circuit to a longer private expedition.

WhatsApp support

We respond within a few hours before the trip, stay available for planning questions, and keep direct communication open during your tour.

Airport and border assistance where applicable

We can help coordinate arrival logistics at Nouakchott or Nouadhibou and support overland travelers with the relevant local arrangements for their route.

Desert safety protocols

Pre-trip briefings, equipped vehicles, and emergency desert protocols support every route. We operate October–March only to avoid dangerous heat.

For full details on our desert safety standards and vehicle protocols, read our Safety Standards page. For Iron Ore Train logistics and boarding guidance, see the complete Iron Ore Train guide.

Common Questions

Mauritania Tour FAQ

When is the best time to book a Mauritania tour?

We operate between October and March. This window avoids the extreme summer heat — desert temperatures above 45°C make travel genuinely dangerous from May through September. October–November is the sweet spot: warm days, cool nights, and outstanding desert light for photography.

Do I need prior desert or travel experience?

No. Most of our clients have never been to the Sahara before. We handle all logistics, provide a full pre-departure briefing, and manage every stage of the trip. Reasonable fitness for walking at ancient sites is the only practical requirement.

How many people travel per group?

Standard tours run with a maximum of 8 people per vehicle. Larger groups travel in multiple vehicles, each with their own dedicated guide. Private tours are available for any group size from 1 person upward.

Can I combine the Iron Ore Train with the Adrar desert circuit?

Yes — this is the recommended route. Nouakchott → Atar → Chinguetti → Ouadane → Terjit → Choum → Iron Ore Train → Nouadhibou. The train becomes the natural finale of the inland desert circuit, followed by the Atlantic coast.

Can you arrange airport transfers and transport separately from a full tour?

Yes. We offer standalone airport transfers, intercity 4×4 transport, and Iron Ore Train connection transfers. See our transport booking page for details.

How do I book and what happens after I contact you?

Send us your dates, group size, arrival city, and interests via WhatsApp or the booking form. We will reply within a few hours with a confirmed itinerary and pricing. We do not use third-party booking platforms — everything is direct.

Is Mauritania safe for travelers?

Yes, with proper guidance. The areas we visit — the Adrar plateau, Choum, and Nouadhibou — are stable and known to us. Many travelers from across Europe and beyond have explored Mauritania safely with local guides. We operate October–March only and apply strict desert safety protocols.

Are solo travelers welcome?

Absolutely. Solo travelers join small-group tours or book private expeditions. Several of our most memorable trips have been with solo travelers who wanted an experience outside the conventional tourist circuit.

For detailed Iron Ore Train guidance, read our Iron Ore Train guide. For transport questions, see the transport booking page. For safety information, see our Safety Standards page.
