Most nationalities receive a Mauritanian visa on arrival at Nouakchott airport or the Dakhla land border. Here is the complete, current process — including what to bring, what to pay, and what can go wrong.
Mauritania operates one of the more traveler-friendly visa systems in West Africa. The majority of nationalities — including citizens of the EU, UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and most South American and Asian countries — can obtain a tourist visa on arrival. No embassy appointment, no online application weeks in advance, no document submission beforehand.
The visa on arrival is available at two main entry points: Nouakchott Oumtounsy International Airport (the most common entry for first-time visitors) and the Guerguerat land border crossing near Nouadhibou (for overland travelers from Dakhla, Western Sahara). Both are reliable options used by thousands of travelers each year.
There are, however, important details — costs, documentation, and specific requirements that, if overlooked, cause real delays at the border. Read this guide before you arrive.
On arrival at Nouakchott Oumtounsy International Airport, follow signs for immigration. You will be directed to the visa desk before the main immigration counters.
At the visa desk, fill in a short entry form (available on the plane or at the desk — carry a pen). Present your passport, which must have at least 6 months of validity remaining, and pay the visa fee in US Dollars cash. The fee is approximately 55 USD as of 2026, but this changes periodically — verify the current amount from a recent traveler report or the Mauritanian embassy website for your country before flying.
Processing typically takes 20-40 minutes including the queue. Your passport is returned with a visa stamp permitting a tourist stay of generally 30 days. Keep all entry documentation safe. The visa desk does not accept card payments. USD cash is required — bring the exact amount if possible, though small denominations are generally accepted.
Mauritania requires proof of yellow fever vaccination for travelers arriving from, or who have transited through, countries where yellow fever transmission is endemic. This is a firm entry requirement, not a recommendation.
If you are traveling to Mauritania directly from Europe, North America, Australia, or other non-endemic regions without transiting through sub-Saharan Africa or tropical South America, you typically do not need proof of vaccination. If you have recently been in Ghana, Cameroon, Senegal, or any other yellow fever endemic country, you must present your International Certificate of Vaccination (the yellow book) on arrival.
Verify the current list of required nationalities and transit countries before you travel — the WHO and your own country's health authority maintain up-to-date lists. Failing to present a required certificate can result in vaccination at the airport (which delays entry significantly) or, in extreme cases, refusal of entry.
While the list is relatively short, a small number of nationalities are excluded from visa on arrival and must apply in advance through a Mauritanian embassy. Israeli passport holders cannot enter Mauritania. Several other nationalities face complicated entry requirements — the specific list changes, and the definitive source is the Mauritanian embassy or consulate for your country.
If you are not certain your nationality qualifies for visa on arrival, check with a Mauritanian embassy three to four weeks before you travel. Discovering an advance visa requirement six weeks out is manageable. Discovering it at the check-in desk is not.
The Guerguerat border crossing — between Dakhla in Western Sahara and the Mauritanian border near Nouadhibou — also offers visa on arrival for most nationalities. The process mirrors the airport: fill in a form, pay in USD, receive a stamp.
For travelers in their own vehicle, additional documentation is required: vehicle insurance (mandatory, purchased at the border for a modest fee), a temporary vehicle importation permit, and an international driving licence. Have all vehicle documents organized and accessible before you reach the Mauritanian border post.
Entry via Rosso (from Senegal, south of Nouakchott) is also possible but generally considered more demanding — the crossing infrastructure is less developed and the process more time-consuming. Most first-time overland travelers coming from the north choose Guerguerat.
The standard tourist visa on arrival is valid for 30 days from entry. For most programs covering the Iron Ore Train, Adrar desert, and Nouadhibou, 30 days is ample — use our booking page to map out a realistic itinerary and confirm you'll be well within the window.
If you need more time, extensions are handled at the Direction de la Surveillance du Territoire (DST) in Nouakchott. Extensions are not guaranteed and require paperwork, so plan your itinerary to finish within the original 30-day period where possible. Overstaying a Mauritanian visa is treated seriously and can result in fines and exit complications. Do not overstay casually.
Insufficient USD cash: the most common problem at Nouakchott airport is travelers who have not brought USD and assumed they could pay by card or use another currency. This is not possible at the visa desk. Carry enough USD before you board your outbound flight.
Passport validity: some travelers arrive with passports that have less than 6 months of validity remaining. Mauritanian immigration can refuse entry on this basis — check your passport well before booking flights.
Yellow fever certificate when required: travelers transiting through endemic countries who forget their yellow book face significant delays or compulsory vaccination at the airport.
Missing the visa process entirely: during busy periods, some travelers walk straight past the visa desk assuming immigration is the first counter. Look for the visa-specific signage before entering the main immigration hall.
Can Americans visit Mauritania without a visa?
US citizens can obtain a visa on arrival at Nouakchott airport and the Guerguerat land border. Bring approximately 55 USD cash (verify current fee before travel) and a passport valid for at least 6 months.
How long is the tourist visa valid?
Typically 30 days from entry. Extensions are possible but must be arranged at the DST office in Nouakchott and are not guaranteed.
Do I need a yellow fever vaccination for Mauritania?
If you are traveling from or have recently transited through a yellow fever endemic country (including most of sub-Saharan Africa and parts of South America), yes — you must present your International Certificate of Vaccination. Verify the current requirements from WHO or your country's health authority before travel.
